“Oh my god. Stop looking at me like that or I will punch you.” Dahlia said.

She was sitting in the window looking out at the sunset. Her dark hair fell in waves around her body as she sighed out.

“I will punch you.” She said again. I didn’t mind. She was always saying that, but her punches didn’t hurt too much.

“Listen kid,” she said, “I can feel your eyes staring daggers at me, I’m just telling you now that I know you are mad at me. But guess what? I don’t care.”

She was wrong, as always. I wasn’t mad at her. I was mad at the situation, but it wasn’t her fault in the slightest.

Earlier that day there had been a fight. A real fight between my brother and her. They had been going out but she dumped him. Honestly, I was glad. She was too good for my little shit of a brother. He was cheating on her. It was his fault.

“Thanks for telling me, by the way.” She said in a softer tone than before.

“I didn’t tell you anything.” I said, still looking at her.

“What do you mean?” She turned from the window completely and sat down on the floor with me. “You left me a note right? Saying he was with that Mariana girl.” Her defenses were coming down.

“Nope.” I said. I hadn’t really. I took her hands in mine. They were so soft. “I didn’t know what was going on. I am sorry.” I looked into her dark eyes, but she didn’t look like she had been crying. She didn’t look sad at all. She looked angry, but Dahlia always looked angry. Dahlia and I have been friends since we were kids and I knew her too well.

“You’re not mad at me?” She asked. I shook my head.

“I’m mad at my idiot brother, for cheating on you.” I said. “I never understood what you saw in him.”

She didn’t respond to that.

“I am sorry.” I said again.

“Why are you sorry? You didn’t do anything.” She snapped. She had turned her head away from me.

“You don’t care that he was cheating on you?” I asked.

“Why would I care?” She said. “It’s been over between us before it began. Plus, I like someone else.”

It wasn’t me. It would never be me, but I still hoped sometimes.

“That guy in our class?” I asked.

“Yeah, that guy.” She said looking at me. “Hey, Sadie?” She asked.

“Hm?” I wished I could live in her angry brown eyes.

“You’re really pretty.” She said. “I could help you get a boyfriend, too.”

“It’s okay, all I need is you.” I smiled. “Isn’t that obvious?”

She blushed.

I have never seen Dahlia blush before.
